Letter from the Executive Director

Eat, Dance, and be Merry - BDA Annual Meeting, November 18th

Central Square Theatre Town Meeting

Matchbook.org Live Event on November 11th

Idea Swap

MCC Youth Reach program

Dear Members,

This month I am going to write a relatively short letter because I am truly hoping to see all of you at our annual meeting on Sunday November 18 th and then will get to have many much longer conversations. You may have noticed that the structure for this year’s annual meeting is different than the past three years when we held informal performances. Why are we holding the meeting in Cambridge City Hall and not in one of our member’s facility? Because we want to demonstrate the new portable floor, let you see how easy it is to put together, how wonderful the spring is, and let you dance on it. Cambridge City Hall is just the sort of site that you can now present a dance performance. With this floor, you can quickly turn a stone floor into a stage without needing a tech crew or any tools. See below for more details about the annual meeting and I really look forward to seeing you there.

Upcoming important BDA programs to watch for? Soon you will receive information about our second dance coupon book. If you are an independent teacher or direct a studio, please participate. It will lead to new students taking your classes. October/November is the time for members to either renew membership or to update their profiles before we send the directory to the printer. Do this before November 12 th and you will automatically be entered into a drawing for tickets.

This month we have included information on a number of community events that link artists to artists, artists to presenters, and artists to youth. Please take a moment to look at each of these events and think about getting involved.

See you on November 18 th

Warmly Yours,

Ruth Birnberg, Executive Director

Matchbook.org Live

Dear colleagues,

As you may have heard, NEFA is doing a new event this year.  On November 11, 2007 NEFA will host the first-ever MatchBook.org LIVE, a daylong event for New England’s small to mid-sized presenters (including schools, libraries & coffee houses) and performing artists. The event will include professional development workshops and networking opportunities followed by an evening ‘In the Spotlight,’ featuring short performances by MatchBook.org artists.

As part of our professional development efforts we want to ensure that MatchBook.org LIVE participants are aware of the many services offered by organizations in the region.  Therefore, we have reserved space at the event for specific service and membership organizations to display information.

If you would like to represent your organization at MatchBook.org LIVE please register by October 26 th.  Table display space will be reserved for you at no additional cost. Click on the link below for more information and registration details.

If you’re unable to attend but would still like your materials displayed in the reserved area please send them to me by October 26 th.

Sincerely,

Adrienne Petrillo

Idea Swap is the annual preparation and networking conference of the Expeditions program. It brings together artists and non-profit organizations that provide arts activities, and is an opportunity to gather and share ideas for touring projects for the New England region. The conference is also a venue for exploring partnership opportunities that will result in Touring or Planning Grant applications to NEFA's Expeditions program. MCC Youth Reach program

YouthReach supports innovative programs that:

  • Provide young people with in-depth arts, humanities, or interpretive science experiences that create opportunities to interact directly with practicing artists, humanists and scientists, and to develop techniques or skills for creative inquiry.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of young people in need.
  • Demonstrate a clear ability to infuse arts, humanities, or science learning programs with the principles of youth development. See Key Characteristics of Youth Development Programs.
  • Marshal the resources of the community and foster substantive collaboration between cultural organizations and other community institutions addressing young people in need.

The primary applicant for a YouthReach project must be a nonprofit cultural organization or an organization having a strong programming history in the proposal's primary discipline. The next two-year application deadline is February 6, 2008. However, it is never too early to begin laying the groundwork for community-based cultural partnerships.
