September 2011 BDA Grapevine

Dear BDA friends,
It is the beginning of a new dance season and our first Grapevine is on Sept 19th!

BDA is thrilled to welcome Liz Lerman, founder of Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, for a conversation about using dance for community-building and community engagement; and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founding artistic director of Urban Bush Women, for a conversation about new company models for today's world - is our current model sustainable? Both of these women have had extensive experience working with dance in different kinds of communities - they want to want to share their experiences and learn about what is unique in Boston.

Planning on coming? RSVP at info@bostondancealliance.org - we provide food and drink, you provide conversation and your good company!

Jawole Willa Jo Zollar                           Liz Lerman

General Information about our Grapevines:
Every other month we will select a nice place to meet, drink, eat, and enjoy each other’s company while talking about dance. BDA Grapevines convene where dance is happening -- and dance is happening in ALL of our neighborhoods -- so check our website for updates on changing monthly locations.

Some months we may predetermine topics and others will be open. Send us something you are interested in talking about and we can add it in. Or just come and get a conversation going!

Join us and hear it through the Grapevine!  We look forward to seeing you there.

We met for the first time since the early summer for a gathering of new folks and old friends. We also talked about the need for dance reviews in Boston publications and how we could help to get reviewers to come to shows, which led us to think about:

  • advertising open rehearsals
  • groupons or ticket packs for shows
  • outreach to other media members for dance reviews (radio, bloggers)

Monday, June 14th 2010
Orleans Restaurant, 65 Holland Street, Davis Square, Somerville

  • how dance history influences our artistic choices

  • How can we engage our audiences?
    • Ideas included open rehearsals, showing films of our process, audience interaction during performances
