DARK ROOM with Bridge Repertory Theatre and Doppelgänger Dance Collective

Bridge Repertory Theater Audition Call – seeking dancers or non-union actors with significant movement experience for DARK ROOM, written by George Brant; inspired by the life, death and photography of Francesca Woodman; directed by Olivia D’Ambrosio; with movement by Doppelgänger Dance Collective. Age range, 20’s. White identifying. Female identifying.

DARK ROOM takes its audience on a journey of eleven scenes, each inspired by a different photograph from the canon of Francesca Woodman, a prolific prodigy who died by suicide in 1981 at the age of 22. Theatrical, imaginative, dark and humorous, the scenes are at once independent and hauntingly interwoven to create an unforgettable experience, all brought to life by an epic cast of 20 – 30 performers who identify as women. The show’s silent protagonist is a single girl in a polka dot dress — a character created by Brant and based on Woodman herself.

Audition Info / Prep. DARK ROOM centers around a silent protagonist called The Girl in the Polka Dot Dress. Through a series of workshops, Director Olivia D’Ambrosio has devised a movement-based concept for the GIPD, as the DARK ROOM team now refers to her. The concept involves the GIPD tracing a reverse / retrograde path through the performance space, which includes a grand staircase. The goal is to create the illusion that she is actually moving in reverse (as opposed to merely walking backwards). At the audition, Director Olivia D’Ambrosio, together with Danielle Davidson of Doppelgänger Dance Collective, will work with you in the space to embody components of this retrograde concept. No specific material is required for you to prepare.
