The 10th annual Linda Plaut Newton Festival of the Arts will be presenting Dance Currents Inc.’s Moving Forward in Place, directed by Kathy Hassinger. Dance Current’s mission is to strengthen the links between past, present and future dance; to present the art of dance as vital to the health and culture of the community; to collaborate with artists of different disciplines; and to participate in fundraising events that benefit the entire community.

Dance Currents will be presenting a film and three dances. The film is titled To Feel the Earth and Touch the Sky, Living the Legacy of American Modern Dance. It is now streaming on the PBS app. The first dance is titled. Still/Moving and it is choreographed by Kathy Hassinger. The music is Beethoven’s bagatelle #2, Opus 126 played live by Simone Meade. The dancers are Mitzi Eppley, and Li-Ann Lim. The second piece is called Diagonal, which is a section of a longer piece Terrain by Yvonne Rainer, one of the first “post-modern” dancers who started the Judson Dance Theater. It was taught by her rehearsal director, Pat Catterson. The dancers are: Hannah Brown, Callie Chapman, Mitzi Eppley, Jason Jordan, Holly Stone and Deanna Zois. The third dance is called Places on the Way. It is by Kathy Hassinger and played live to Liszt’s Consolations by Simone Mead. The dancers are Mitzi Epply, Li-Ann Lim and Jason Jordan. The performance is free and open to all due in part to the generous contribution of the Newton Cultural Council, The Massachusetts Cultural Council, Newton Community Pride, and the Newton Cultural Development Center.
