Dear BDA Community,

We kicked off the week with Trans Visibility Day and will wrap it up with International Day of Conscience. It’s quite the week to be an artist – or truly any human with an open mind and an open heart – in today’s climate. In the past 5 years that I’ve lived in Boston, I’ve been grateful to see how much growth has happened surrounding the inclusivity of dance and how dance has also helped boost inclusivity elsewhere. I’ve seen more trans-led events, more events with trans artists, more queer-driven events that are supported by grants. They are baby steps in the larger scheme of things, and it’s progress nevertheless.

I hope you find some time this week (and, hopefully more often than that) to reflect on what your impact can be in making your environments safe spaces for people who continue to be marginalized and degraded by the current administration of the USA.

BDA Member Events This Week

Danza Orgánica presents the 12th annual We Create Festival: The movements that free(d) us. Witness works of 12 We Create Artist Fellows who have spent the past six months creating works around this year’s theme. Friday and Saturday, April 4 & 5, 7-9 PM at Hibernian Hall, 184 Dudley St., Roxbury.

Red Baraat Festival of Colors is an immersive celebration that melds the sounds of the South Asian diaspora with kaleidoscopic visual imagery. Led by dhol player Sunny Jain, Red Baraat has transformed the festive spirit of the Hindu holiday of Holi into a year-round tour of communal revelry that brings together what NPR has called “the best party band in years,” a montage of classic Bollywood visuals, and joyful dancing. Thursday, April 3, 7:30 PM at The Strand Ballroom & Theatre, 79 Washington Street, Providence, RI. Tickets: $30-$40.Mira Göksel presents Lokma pt.3 (grief) as a part of the Boston Center for the Arts Dance Lab. Friday, April 4, 7:30 PM at Martin Hall, 527 Tremont Street, Boston.

FREE! – Nursery Grooveis a new project with the goal of challenging the connection between music, movement, and memory, inspiring exercise and education through imagination. Stick around for a juggling workshop! Saturday, April 5, 3:00-5:30 PM at the Black Market, 2136 Washington St., Nubian Square.

Deborah Mason’s CYDP Dance Company celebrates its 21st season with “The Rhythm of Life” featuring choreography by resident and guest faculty: Deborah Mason, Adrienne Hawkins, Christopher Huggins, Jenny Oliver, Jeryl Palana, Niki Thelismond, Ruka White, Leslie Woodies, and Demi Remick. Saturday, April 5, – 2 & 7 PM, and Sunday, April 6, 2 PM, at Boston University Dance Theater, 915 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston. Tickets: $25.
